*Free Domestic and International Shipping with Buy it Now Pineapple Aloha Shirt Duke Kahanamoku for Champion Maker: Kahanamoku - Champion An Hawaiian Original Coming to you courtesy of the Duke, no - not John Wayne! THE DUKE - Duke Kahanamoku, who was to surfing what John Wayne was to the western movie. Kahanamoku was considered the "father of surfing." I suppose you could say he was the Michael Jordan of his day and he leased his name to various labels most markedly the Aloha Shirt by Champion. From what I can gather, Kahanamoku shirts are among the most prized. Description: This awesome 1930s silk camp shirt is loaded with big luscious pineapples. Most are whole, but a few are cut cross-section to give just a hint of their juicy goodness! Though the colors are muted, the rich saturated yellow reminds us of our favorite tropical fruit! Distinctions: Soft, cool silk; original, pearl buttons and horizontal buttonholes; double breast pockets; invisible stitched collar + collar loop; straight hem in traditional camp style. Date: How does one begin to date a garment such as this? I don't know of or see any change in the label over time, so that's no help. Research tells me that silk was used in the early history of the Aloha shirt, and it probably wasn't used after 1941 and throughout WWII because of the embargo on silk and other Japanese goods. The colors are spot on for late 1930s since we were still in the Great Depresson and too bright colors were not appropriate. My due dilligence leads me to cautiously date this Duke Kahanamoku for Champion Aloha Shirt sometime just before 1939. Fabric: Silk Size: Vintage Medium Measurements: shoulder to shoulder 17 1/2" armpit to armpit 22 1/2" length (bottom of collar down) 26" Colors: espresso brown - cumin - sunflower yellow cement gray - dove gray - white Condition: Collar button has a chipped edge, and some of the buttons, though original have been resewn. I have looked carefully over every inch of this shirt and find one little damage spot. It is a tiny stress tear (almost looks like a little snag) just above the outside top of the left pocket. It is very small and blends in with the graphic (took me three searches to find it). This absolutely in no way detracts from the uber grandness of this sweet shirt! NOTE: The last photo show the damage area. Smoke-Free, Pet-Free Home *If you are interested in anything else vintage (clothing, ephemera, music, iconery, etc) please meander on over to my ebay store.
